[edit] Not Wearing His Armor

I've checked his inventory and his armor's health is at zero. I tried repairing it and reverse-pickpocketing it but it's not weightless is there a way to get him to put the armor back on?

I'm not sure, if you're using the PC I'm sure there's a solution (unfortunately I have the PS3 version and am not so savvy with the Console Commands). Alternately you could use a Permenant Bound Items glitch (found here Oblivion:Glitches) and then give them to him, it feels a bit cheap but it'll definitely help out! [edit] Essential Character

The page says that he's essential until he joins the knights - does this mean that it's better (or safer for him in Berich's tomb, anyway) to deny his request for knighthood until after avenging Sir Roderic? Or is he no longer essential once he actually reports Roderic's demise?

I'd say so. I've actually suffered his loss because I accepted his request prior to doing The Sword of The Crusader. Denying his request to join until after you've completed it will probably be the best idea if you want him to survive, he seems to be prone to dying when making his way towards Underpall Cave, either by woodland creatures or falling (depending on how you approach it)!
