[edit] Quick Walkthrough
- Speak with Ainethach about the troubles with Sanuarach Mine.
- Talk to Atar about why he shut the mine down.
- Convince Ainethach to sell the mine, or convince Atar to leave.
[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
When you first enter Karthwasten, you will see the townsfolk squaring off against a group of mercenaries sent by the Silver-Blood family in Markarth to secure the mine after a Forsworn incident. The Silver-Bloods are demanding that the mine be signed over to them in return for the protection they provided in the last attack. The mercenaries have been instructed to prevent anyone from returning to work in the Sauranach Mine until the rights to it are signed over to the Silver-Blood family. Ainethach, the owner of the mine, is arguing with Atar, the leader of the mercenary band, when you first walk into town.
[edit] Deciding to Help Ainethach
If you decide to help the "old man" in the town, you will need to talk to him. Ainethach should be standing on the porch of his house during the day, and once approached he will agree to let you help him, and will ask you to convince Atar to leave. Unless you catch back up to the band before they go back into the mine, you will need to proceed straight through the mine to the rear area, where Atar stands on a raised platform.
[edit] Talking to Atar
Once you talk to him after agreeing to help Ainethach, you will be given the option "I want you and your men to leave" He will ask you for a reason, and the player will be given the usual Persuade, Bribe, Intimidate options.
| Option | Dialogue | Reaction | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| This whole town wants you out. Leave. (Persuade) | Passed: Dealing with a mob wouldn't be good for my coin purse. Fine. We're leaving. Failed: Let's see them make us. |
Passed: Return to Ainethach Failed: Nothing |
|||
| You'll listen to gold, I take it? (Bribe) | Passed: That I will, stranger. This is more than the Silver-Bloods are paying us. We'll clear out. Failed: Don't think I'm being paid already? Get lost. |
Passed: Return to Ainethach Failed: Nothing |
|||
| I think I'll just kill you. (Intimidate) | Passed: Whoa. Wait a second. I was just kidding. We'll leave. We'll leave! Failed: I thought today was going to be boring. |
Passed: Return to Ainethach Failed: Nothing |
|||
| On second thought, I'll be leaving. | Milk drinker. | Nothing | |||
- A successful Persuade will see them peacefully pack up, claiming that they don't want trouble with the townsfolk (causing one to wonder why a gathering of the townsfolk, such as when the player walks into town, didn't convince them to leave).
- Bribing results in the mercenaries packing it up and moving it out peacefully.
- A successful Intimidate resulted in them leaving peacefully as well.
Note that even after successfully persuading, bribing, or intimidating, the mercenaries will claim that the mine is theirs, and will warn against sudden movements. There is still no bounty for killing the mercenaries even after they agree to leave.
[edit] Not Talking to Atar
A very satisfying option is to not talk to Atar, and to simply kill all the mercenaries. No mages in the group, just squishy swordsmen and Atar in his plate armor. The soldier outside the mine will still pass pleasantries with you after taking this option. There is no bounty for killing the mercenaries inside the mine, even if you attack first.
[edit] Deciding to Help Atar
Atar will offer you a cut of the purchase price if you convince Ainethach to sell. You have to talk to Ainethach, and will be given the usual persuade, bribe, intimidate options if you tell him "I think you should sell the mine".
| Option | Dialogue | Reaction | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| They won't stop until you do. (Persuade) | Passed: You're right. They always get what they want, somehow. Fine. Tell Atar I'll sell. Failed: Someone has to stand up to them. I won't sell. |
Passed: Return to Atar Failed: Nothing |
|||
| Look. I'll give you a fair price. (Bribe) | Passed: That's more gold than they're offering. Fine. I'll sell. Failed: This isn't about the money. |
Passed: Return to Atar Failed: Nothing |
|||
| You do or you get hurt. (Intimidate) | Passed: Easy. I'll sell. Just don't hurt anyone. | Passed: Return to Atar | |||
| Forget it, then. | Let's do that. | Nothing | |||
After successfully convincing him, you will have to run back to Atar to tell him the good news, whereupon he will give you your cut.
[edit] Reward
The reward is the same regardless of which path you choose to take, a medium amount of leveled gold. Don't miss the 7 silver ore veins in the mine and the leveled shield that Atar carries (if you decide to kill the mercenaries).
| Levels | Reward |
|---|---|
| 1-9 | 400 |
| 10-19 | 600 |
| 20-29 | 800 |
| 30-39 | 1,000 |
| 40+ | 1,200 |
Helping Ainethach will additionally prompt Lash gra-Dushnikh into making you Blood-Kin with the Orcs (if you aren't already).
