Tidewater Cave is a natural sea cave found just southeast of Leyawiin on the shore of Topal Bay, near the mouth of the Lower Niben.[1] As the name would imply, the cave's tunnels are partially flooded.[1]

History[edit]

Like all natural caves, these tunnels once served as the capillaries of Nirn, pulsing with the divine essence of the Aedra.[2]

Following the death of Emperor Leovic in 2E 577 and the subsequent downfall of the Empire of Cyrodiil under Emperor Varen Aquilarios, Councilor Faleria of the Elder Council officially retired from her position as overseer of the Imperial treasury. She moved to Leyawiin and continued to offer advice to her fellow Councilors in their new roles as Leyawiin's Council of Legates.[3] Faleria brought a vast amount of bureaucratic paperwork with her from her lifetime spent as a public servant. She chose Tidewater Cave as a hiding place for this cache of documents, where it remained until circa 2E 582. After a string of assassinations targeting her fellow Councilors, Faleria relocated her records to Leyawiin in order to search for references to the Four Ambitions.[4] At that time, the cave was inhabited by vicious wildlife, including bog dogs, crocodiles, death hoppers, and hoarvors.[5]

By 3E 433, the cave was inhabited by wild beasts as well as Kalperklan trolls, a group of trolls inexplicably obsessed with hoarding pairs of calipers.[1] The presence of the trolls made the cave an excellent hiding spot for the Eye of Nocturnal, which had been stolen by a pair of Argonian thieves from Leyawiin. The thieves hid the Eye in a flooded passage, safe from the trolls due to their hatred of water. However, the Daedric Prince Nocturnal was displeased by this theft, and she sent the Hero of Kvatch to Leyawiin in search of the Eye. The Hero eventually located it within Tidewater Cave and returned it to the Prince.[6]
