This Ayleid structure is simply a large catacomb, containing 2 connected chambers of 20 tombs each. Possibly a large powerful Ayleid family was buried here. Anyhow, if you'd like to avoid the zombies altogether, make sure you have a bow on hand. When entering the room containing the statue, walk along the walls, until you reach the opposite corner of the room. Shoot an arrow at the statue and it should roll to the opposite side near the room's exit. The zombies are only triggered if you walk into the middle of the room.

Furthermore, if you have high acrobatics (I was fortified to 120) you can skip the trip up the stairs to get to the coffer resting on the small bridge. If you time your jump correctly you can activate the coffer and grab the contents (In case you forgot to do this beforehand and zombies are chasing you)
