A door across a ramp above requires a key. The gate at the bottom leads to an overgrown doorway. Neither can be accessed without following the related quest.

 Zone 1: Bthardamz Upper District
The first room has a chest on a table and a leveled damage health potion along with a pickaxe on another table. Continuing down will lead you to a novice-locked gate on the right that allows you to bypass a sleeping chamber containing a few sleeping Afflicted, although they can be easily killed in their sleep, and a leveled damage health potion. Continue down the hall - the room on the right has an adept-locked gate with a chest and a leveled damage stamina potion behind it. Further down the hall are three Afflicted praying in a large room. The next large room will have four Afflicted in it. Dispatch them then go up to the dais on the right and pull a lever to open the gate. There is a gold ore vein near the left ramp before going through the gate.
In the next room, go down the stairs to find a Dwarven chest on the wall, then go through the door on the far side of the room. The room straight ahead contains two Dwarven spheres, but you can hide in the middle and kill them as you wish. There is a chest on the wall where they came out. The ramp down has a moving spinning blade trap, and is patrolled by two Afflicted. The trap may kill one or both of the Afflicted before you reach them. The next large room contains four Afflicted - get the potion on the left then open the door to enter Bthardamz Workshop.
 Zone 2: Bthardamz Workshop
The first room you enter is a living area containing two Afflicted: a mage and a melee fighter. If you wait a minute before attacking them, you will witness a scene in which the melee fighter wakes up the mage, bringing orders from Orchendor. A note lies on the desk in the mage's room. Proceed to the next room with three large pipes venting out steam. There is a small chest on your left - when you approach it a Dwarven spider will ambush you. Three more spiders will ambush you in the center of the room. The door upstairs will take you to the upper level of the Bthardamz Upper District with a chest and a leveled damage stamina potion on the balcony. Return to the Workshop to explore the southern room housing two Afflicted and a chest. The door there will lead you back to the Bthardamz Upper District.
The first area is occupied by four Afflicted. As you make your way up the stairs, you will come upon a door on the right that takes you to a one-room, partitioned Bthardamz Dwelling.
 Zone 3: Bthardamz Dwelling
Two Afflicted Nords, a brother and sister from the Reach who had been seeking to be closer to Peryite, can be found here. If you sneak in and wait a moment, you may hear the sister voice her regrets to her sleeping brother about believing in Orchendor and his promises, as she does not feel Peryite's favor and sees no way out of their situation. There are two chests in this room: one is behind a locked gate, out of sight of the Afflicted, on a table next to a copy of the Speech skill book Biography of the Wolf Queen, and the other, which contains a small amount of gold and some other minor loot, is next to the two Afflicted.
Upon exiting the Dwelling, go straight beyond the other stairs into a passageway that contains a chest. Then, go up the aforementioned stairs and take a left at the top. Off to the right look down and you will find another chest. Continue up to enter the Bthardamz Lower District, but first, check the roofs of the buildings below for a third chest and a gold ore vein on a ledge.
 Zone 4: Bthardamz Lower District
In the first room, open the gate on the left to find a chest. As you near the first turn in the hall two Dwarven spiders will emerge from their ports and attack you. Open the door to find yourself in an arena-like room with an illuminated round platform in its center, on which lies a chest, and tiered seats around it. There are three Afflicted – two seated spectators and one standing on the platform. To dispose of the standing Afflicted you may pull the lever in front of you, which activates four static swinging blades on the platform. Kill the other two Afflicted and loot the chest. Move through the area to the waterfall room to confront two more Afflicted. When the path first turns to the right, jump into the stream and follow the left bank upstream, jumping up the rocks as needed. You will find a skeleton and a chest hidden behind a wall. Through the open gate two Dwarven spheres will attack. There is a trap in the middle of the path along with three Afflicted - the small room to the right holds a chest. Head to the right where there is a gold ore vein and a stairway with two leveled Dwarven spiders on top. Beyond that is the door to the Bthardamz Study.
 Zone 5: Bthardamz Study
Open the gate in front of you to find a chest, then open the door. Avoid the pressure plate at the bottom of the stairs and kill the Dwarven sphere at the top of the stairs. Open the gate and search the chest in front of you before ascending the stairs back to the Bthardamz Lower District.
After you come back from the study, walk down the first ramp and open the gate on the right to find a chest. As you come back out of the gate, look to your left at a ledge on the building you just exited to see another chest, which is accessible by jumping on the nearby rooftop. As you approach the waterfall four Afflicted will come from the right. On top of the dais is another three Afflicted and a chest on the wall. Move down the hall to enter the Bthardamz Arcanex.
 Zone 6: Bthardamz Arcanex
The first area has two Dwarven spheres and three Dwarven spiders - dispatch them and head up the ramp. You will come to a set of stairs in front of you where at the top a Dwarven centurion will come out of the hall. Take it down and then head back down the stairs and turn right where you will find another flight of stairs and a chest at the bottom. Head back up both sets of stairs and there is a quicksilver vein on the left. Continue down the hall and some stairs, past some Dwarven crossbows, where you will be ambushed by three Dwarven spiders and eventually find Orchendor. Kill him, then head up the stairs to find a chest and the lift to the surface of Skyrim.
- After you kill Orchendor, his body may disappear, making it impossible to retrieve the key for the elevator.
- To fix this, simply go back to the door you used to enter Bthardamz Arcanex, enter Bthardamz Lower District, and re-enter Arcanex. You should find his body lying where you killed him.
- At the overgrown door it is possible to pull the lever to open the gate and run inside without having started the quest. Once this is done, there is no chain release and you can get trapped. The only way out is to fast travel.
- The lever at the entrance may not lower the bars.
- Reloading a save may fix this.
