The Library of Andule is a library located in the Molag Amur region of Vvardenfell which was once used by the Great Houses of the High Velothi culture to store their knowledge. The place contained wards to defend it from intruders and the ones that wanted to pass through them had to pass a test that demanded their trust in Prophet Veloth, following a path that simulated the ancestral exodus of the Velothi from Summerset to Morrowind.[1] Information contained within the location described genealogy and old details that could reveal ancient ancestral connections which were highly sought after.[2][3] The library was protected by wards, challenges,[1] and ancestral spirits representing the Dres, Indoril, Redoran, and Hlaalu houses.[4][5]

In addition to the genealogy records, the library contained ancient texts dedicated to comprehending the roles and policies of the Great Houses such as Understanding House Dres by Solamar Dres,[6] Understanding House Hlaalu by Hlaandu Hlaalu,[7] Understanding House Indoril by Andor Indoril,[8] and Understanding House Redoran by Remoran Redoran.[9][2] Another text, The Library of Andule contained instructions on how to enter the center of the library.[1] Despite containing genealogy of House Telvanni,[3] it lacked similar text about the house or the guarding ancestral spirit representing them.[2]

At some point, the position of the library was lost, but it was believed that with rubbings of ancestral tombs of thirty revered Dunmer families around Vvardenfell, it would be possible to once again find the location.[10] By the time of the Second Era in the year 2E 582, one of the librarians in Vivec City had the aid of Vivec himself who provided him with magic that enabled the worker to record the clues of those rubbings and create a miniature model of Vvardenfell that would allow him to find the library.[11]

This librarian eventually recruited the help of the Vestige to search for more of the rubbings, with the hero eventually finding all of them which allowed for the model to be completed and the location of the Library of Andule to be found once again.[12] The Vestige then ventured into the library to gain access to the knowledge within, with them being able to recover the ancient genealogies of the old Great Houses before delivering them back to the librarian.[5]

Many centuries after the rediscovery of the location, part of the Library of Andule was turned into an ancestral tomb of the Andules family of Dunmer, but it was later occupied by Daedra, with the place remaining occupied even by the year of the appearance of the Nerevarine in 3E 427 and it is possible that the hero killed the Daedra inside. By this point, many parts of the ancient library were no longer accessible.[13]

Notes[edit]

  • House Hlaalu still appeared in the Library as the location was built prior to the House being stripped of its Great House status.[14]
  • Former Great House Dagoth does not appear in the Library despite being a Great House during the time of the Chimer.[14]
  • The excavation of the Library of Andule was listed alongside significant events such as the Escharotic Schism, the War of the First Council, the Battle of Red Mountain, and the disappearance of the Dwemer as a significant event in the history of the Dunmer by Archmagister Nelos Otheri of the House Telvanni in his formal rejection of the Ebonheart Pact membership.[15]
