Silence for D seconds
The bane of all spellcasters. You cannot cast spells while silenced. It is still possible to use potions, staves, and scrolls. A spell is not interrupted if the silence hits after casting is begun. Silence effects can be cancelled using the Dispel effect (e.g., from a potion or scroll).
Greater and Lesser Powers are immune to Silence effects. Be aware that most Monsters and Undead have at least one power at their disposal (specified in the creatures' detailed descriptions as Immune to Silence), so Silence may have little or no effect on them.
On the other hand, if you are Silenced, any powers your character possesses can still be employed.
[edit] Notes
- Silence is one of the enchantments available for making a custom mage's staff (it is also found on random generic staves).
- Despite its name, Silence does not prevent the PC or NPCs from engaging in dialogue, nor does it stop them from groaning or screaming in combat.

* Since Vampire Dust has two varieties, it is actually possible to make a poison of Silence at Novice level using one of each type. However, one of the Vampire Dust varieties is of limited supply and some is needed for a quest, so you should be careful not to waste it all.
