[edit] Detailed Walkthrough

[edit] To Serve Sithis

Speak with Vicente Valtieri in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary to complete the "To Serve Sithis" mini-quest and receive Vicente's final contract. It seems Francois Motierre in Chorrol borrowed a lot of money from underworld types and has missed a payment. The lenders don't even want the money. They feel insulted and want him dead, sending an enforcer to kill him. Francois has hired The Dark Brotherhood to fake his death and take the life of his mother instead, a detail Vicente tells you has already been handled by Lucien Lachance. Vicente gives you the tools you'll need to fake Motierre's death: a single-use dagger coated with a special poison called Languorwine and an antidote to revive him later.

[edit] Motierre's Plan

Travel to Chorrol and break into Motierre's house in order to speak with him. His house is located just north of the Chorrol South Gate and is protected by a "Hard" lock. Once inside, Francois tells you that those he is indebted to have sent the enforcer Hides-His-Heart to kill him. He wants you to use the dagger Vicente gave you to slash him once, fooling the enforcer into believing he is dead. You are to then flee Chorrol without killing the enforcer. That way Hides-His-Heart will believe Motierre is dead and return to his organization and inform them that a Dark Brotherhood assassin got to Motierre first. You are to then wait a day, locate his "body" in the Chapel Undercroft and use the antidote to revive him.

[edit] Death and Revival

Hides-His-Heart will arrive shortly. Play your part in the charade, slicing Francois once and fleeing Chorrol. Return in one full day, go to the Chapel Undercroft and administer the antidote (activate the "corpse" and it will be administered automatically). It seems that revival is something the other inhabitants of the Undercroft take exception to, seeing it as a desecration. After you have revived Francois, three Motierre Zombies will attack you (one right next to you and two others). You must protect Motierre and lead him outside to the local inn so that he can buy passage out of the province. You can have Motierre wait until it is safe. Keep Motierre alive, as this is the only Dark Brotherhood mission that can be failed.

[edit] Back to Safety

Kill or avoid the remaining two zombies and make your way to The Grey Mare Inn with Motierre, then return to Vicente. If you successfully completed the quest, you will receive Cruelty's Heart (a leveled amulet adding Willpower and Strength), advancement to Eliminator rank, and the Sanctuary Well Key. The key allows easier access to the Sanctuary via the well outside.

If you kill Hides-His-Heart, fail to save Motierre, or kill Motierre, you fail this quest. You are allowed to proceed with the Dark Brotherhood questline, but there are negative consequences. Vicente's disposition will markedly drop (-71, instead of +80 for successfully completing the quest). In this case, you will not receive 1 Infamy point for this quest. Also, several rewards will be delayed until the completion of the next quest, The Lonely Wanderer: he will not give you the well key, you will not gain the rank of Eliminator, and (on the Xbox 360) you will not obtain the achievement for the rank of Eliminator.

Vicente will no longer be your liaison in the Brotherhood. After this quest Vicente will offer the non-contract quest Darkness Eternal, where you are offered his "Dark Gift" of vampirism. Ocheeva is your new contract-giver.

[edit] Notes

  • If you break into Motierre's house before joining the Dark Brotherhood, Motierre will exclaim that you're not the one that Lachance said would come (to undertake this very mission). He'll tell you that you are free to loot his home without fear of the guards.
  • After you "kill" Motierre, Hides-His-Heart will attack you. Run out of the house, quickly, right after the "kill".
  • You must actually leave Chorrol after you've slashed Francois in order for your escape to count. As long as you haven't fought with Hides-His-Heart, you will not have a bounty on your head, and the guards won't bother you if you hang around town. However, Hides-His-Heart will stay in the Motierre home and will not leave until you have departed from Chorrol.
  • If you get into a fight with Hides-His-Heart you will end up with a bounty on your head, even if you don't kill him.
  • Make sure you do not harm or kill Hides-His-Heart, as this will result in the failure of the quest
  • A very easy way to avoid Hides-His-Heart's blade but complete the mission: Once the two start talking, slash Motierre. Don't wait for their chat to finish, just do it and run for the door, and don't stop running until you leave Chorrol. Then just wait and return.
  • The undercroft is unlocked from 9am to 9pm, make sure you turn up then. If you turn up at another time, the door requires a key. You can pickpocket that key off the Orc in the chapel, but it still won't open the undercroft for some reason.
  • The zombies that attack you in the undercroft will not appear until you have spoken with the revived Motierre. Once you wake him up, he will try to talk to you, so if you back away from him before he has a chance, he may follow you, in which case you can lead him right to the undercroft doors before engaging in dialog with him.
  • You can pickpocket the "dead" Motierre in the undercroft for a small amount of gold. If you have already used the antidote but have not woken him up, you run the same risk of being caught as when pickpocketing any other sleeping character. If you're a risk-taker, you can use this to wake him up. Motierre will still follow you to finish the contract, and the guard who charges into the Undercroft to arrest you can fight off the zombies - an excellent diversion. Just be sure to pay off your bounty.
  • You can also run from the zombies, which will cause them to follow you outside. Guards and townsfolk will attack them.
  • Don't forget to go back later and loot Motierre's house. The house is essentially left open to your plundering: nothing is marked as stolen, and you can even sleep in the bed. However, most of the containers in the house will reset, so it is not safe to use this house for storage, unless you make use of the display cases or simply leave your things on the floor.
  • Do not fast travel immediately after leaving the house as it is possible for Hides-His-Heart to be killed by guards. Simply exit Chorrol through one of the nearby gates.
  • Motierre's "corpse", affected by the Languorwine poison, is not the same as that of the NPC in the undercroft. If you store any items on his corpse, hoping he will wake up wearing/wielding them, you will lose them.

[edit] Bugs

  • If Motierre becomes stuck after reviving in the temple, tell him to follow you, step back into the undercroft, and back out, he should now follow you. If he still will not follow, hitting him should cause him to chase after you. Lead him to the Gray Mare and then yield.
  • If you leave Chorrol while Motierre is following you he may not follow you once you re-enter Chorrol.
  • If you steal the key from the Orc in the chapel and don't wait 24 hours you can not open the door.
  • Sometimes, Motierre has been found standing up when you first enter the undercroft, despite the fact that he is supposed to be dead (so that you can then revive him).
    • Some players have found that waiting for 24 hours anywhere outside the undercroft fixes the problem

Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage quest stage. Where quest is the internal name of the quest, and stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
