  2. Clear out Nonwyll Cavern.
  3. Return to Modryn Oreyn for your reward.

[edit] Detailed Walkthrough

[edit] Viranus Donton

When you reach the rank of Protector, Modryn Oreyn in Chorrol will give you this quest. Your job is to take Viranus Donton, the son of the Guildmaster, on a contract to boost his confidence. You are to locate Galtus Previa who has gone missing in Nonwyll Cavern, northwest of Chorrol.

Despite what Modryn says, it won't do any harm if you do go talk to Vilena Donton about this quest. She will just tell you where to find her son.

Cross the street from the Fighters Guild to the Donton house, Viranus will probably be right inside or upstairs in a sitting area. Talk to him and he will follow you. He wants to go talk to his mother first, but you talk him out of that idea with no trouble at all.

[edit] Nonwyll Cavern

Viranus Donton will now follow you anywhere you go, and you need not lead him directly to his quest cave right away (though it may not be a good idea to bring him on any Thieves Guild missions). Viranus may well be the very worst NPC in the entire game to have at your side in a hostile dungeon, though he is very amusing if you can take care of yourself. He is a complete imbecile: he runs headlong into battles with groups of 3 or 4 Savage Trolls and Ogres, and you have no way to control what he does. Unfortunately, you can't make him wait outside, or anywhere else for that matter. At least you don't have to worry about protecting him. Viranus cannot be killed. He just keeps getting knocked unconscious, over and over. He does serve as a decent distraction when he is awake, however, and you can get some practice with either your marksmanship or ranged Destruction spells if you stand off from the fight. You can also get some good Restoration practice in between fights by healing him.

When you're ready, travel to Nonwyll Cavern. It is located a short walk up into the hills north of the Chorrol North Gate.

Once inside, fight your way through a few Savage Trolls in the upper area. Once that area is cleared, go through either of the two doors leading to the Chamber of Titans where you will find the body of Galtus Previa at the furthest end of the cavern. Beware of the five Savage Trolls, two Savage Ogres, and one Savage Minotaur between the entrance and Galtus Previa's corpse. All of these "savage" monsters are leveled, so low-level characters who have never seen ogres or minotaurs before will find the savage ones easier than the typical versions; high-level characters who are used to fighting ogres and minotaurs are likely to have a difficult time with these ones. Lead Viranus to Previa's body, and a journal entry will prompt you to report back to Oreyn.

[edit] Reward

Return to the Fighters Guild in Chorrol and report to Modryn Oreyn. Modryn will give the contract pay to Viranus Donton, but you get one Fame point and a random type of blade; Dagger, Shortsword, Longsword, or Claymore; with the following stats:

1-3 Iron Drain Fatigue 30pts for 10sec

[edit] Notes

  • It's worth noting here that Nonwyll Cavern is not a dungeon that repopulates. You can clear it out before you get the quest, then simply lead Viranus Donton through an empty dungeon to the body. Don't forget to check the treasure chests on your second visit though, as the treasure respawns.
  • Like all NPCs, Viranus will remove any weapons/armor/clothing when their health reaches zero. Given how he is an essential NPC and boldly rushes into battle, this NPC quirk renders him naked quite quickly.
  • You do not need to actually kill all of the trolls in the cave. The quest update is triggered by finding Galtus' body.
  • You do not need to stay near Viranus. If you rush ahead of him (i.e., if you have Invisibility or high Chameleon), Viranus will reappear next to you when you leave the cave.
  • Modryn Oreyn is very interested in Galtus Previa's Broken Shield if you return with it - he takes it from you to research some symbols scratched into it. However, you do not need to bring the shield back to complete the quest.

Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage quest stage. Where quest is the internal name of the quest, and stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
