Detailed Walkthrough

After finding an Ancient Falmer Tome, take it to Urag gro-Shub in The Arcanaeum at the College of Winterhold. He will purchase the book from you for 1000 gold, and give you a translated copy.

Book Locations

Unknown Book, Vol. I	map	Between the Wayshrine of Learning and the Wayshrine of Sight. If you are approaching the book from the Wayshrine of Sight, simply head southwest until you come across a path in the middle of a ridge. At the top there will be several Frostbite Spiders. Head down the other side. Among the ruins to the right there will be a skeleton clutching a chest. The book is next to the chest. If you are approaching from the Wayshrine of Learning, go to your right along the frozen lake and you will see the ruins.
Unknown Book, Vol. II	map	Most easily accessed with the Emerald Paragon, which is located on the body of a Frost Giant in the Falmer village. Once you have the Emerald Paragon, travel to the Paragon Portal, located to the east of the Wayshrine of Resolution, and place the Emerald Paragon in the Paragon Socket. A portal will open to the Forgotten Vale Overlook. The book will be near the chest towards the edge of the waterfall. You can also jump from the Inner Sanctum Balcony to the south and make your way along the cliffs. Make sure you have at least 450 Health, or use Become Ethereal, to survive the jump.
Unknown Book, Vol. III	map	Near the Glacial Crevice. Travel upriver toward the entrance to the Glacial Crevice, but do not enter. Turn around and to your right you will see a path that leads up to the mountains. Instead of going to the top of the mountain, take a sharp left onto the bridge. Continue crossing the bridges until you come to a fork. Take the left bridge. The book will be inside a Falmer tent.
Unknown Book, Vol. IV	map	After exiting the Glacial Crevice proceed through the Falmer village. After you pass under a small arch, you will see a large tent with a mammoth skull on top of it (it will be straight in front of you, to the east, as you walk out of the arch's shadow— it can be hard to see with a lot of snow). The book is on the small table inside the tent.

Notes

• Urag gro-Shub will give 1000 gold per Ancient Falmer Tome (Unknown Book), for a total of 4000 gold. If all four tomes are in your inventory, he takes them all and it will appear he only gave you 1000 gold; however, he indeed gives 4000 gold. This can be verified by checking your total gold before and after giving him the Falmer Tomes.

Bugs

• Sometimes the miscellaneous objective will not show as completed, even when the book is turned in.

Notes

• Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
• Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
• Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
• If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
• On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage DLC1VQFVBooks stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest DLC1VQFVBooks.
