[edit] Links
Is this linked from anywhere? It might be lost to the abyss. 67.142.130.49 18:29, 2 March 2007 (EST)
- Yes, although it's pretty deep into the structure from the main page.
- Main Page links to All Games links to General:Main Page Links to here.
The lack of information garnered in a quick survey of the relevant pages leads me to believe that anyone can post fanfiction here. My apologies to other editors if I've overlooked something; if the dominant editors here want my fic (Shade-Eyes) removed, let me know and I'll comply. --Kementari 03:41, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
- You're welcome to post here. The story starts interestingly too! --RpehTalk 07:42, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
How do you post Fanfic? I want to post my own. -Swiftstar
- Easily done. In the location bar of your browser, change the "General:Fanfiction" part to "General:My Story". You'll get a message saying that the page doesn't exist yet. Create it, enter your text and off you go! You can link it in to the main page by editing "General:Fanfiction" and adding a similar link to the ones you'll see already on the page. Good luck! --Rpeh•T•C•E• 02:06, 5 December 2007 (EST)
[edit] A Few Questions
First, are the summaries taboo to edit? I ask because there are some that I'd like to reword, specifically the ones that begin with "Fanfiction" or "Fanfic," since anyone reading this page knows these are fanfictions.
Next, I was wondering about Honor Thy Brothers... it's credited to MadMax06, but his only edit was this one to Oblivion:Dagon Shrine. This story was added to the page by Vook. Does that break our copyright rules, or anything?
Finally, it seems strange to have red links for the authors' names. Should these three be changed instead to bold text, or links to the users' contribs pages? --GuildKnightTalk2me 22:28, 12 February 2008 (EST)
- Editing summaries, I'd say probably you shouldn't do, but you might inform the user of this, so they can choose to do if they wish - might be a problem since some of these people aren't active on the site anymore. It does seem a bit redundant, maybe, but it feels to me like editing the description is almost as bad as editing the fanfic itself, which is generally looked down on. The way I see it, Fanfics are really more an extention of the writers' User pages (one reason I've said before that think they should all be moved into the User namespace, as sub-pages or something. The links could remain here so that there's a central location, but I still do think that the actual fanfiction pages belong in User-space - that way the editor can maintain more control over their own work, and it's clear that these pages do not represent the site as a whole.)
- Couldn't tell you what the deal is with Vook and MadMax06. You'd have to ask them.
- I'd say keep the red links there - if the author chooses not to create a user page, that's their perogative. Though you might make suggestions on their talk pages to that effect. Up to you.
- Just my opinions here. Other people might disagree with me. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:53, 12 February 2008 (EST)

- Personally, I don't think that there is any taboo against editing fanfiction. On multiple occasions, editors have modified fanfiction that was not created by them (spelling, grammar, dividing pages, etc.) These are not articles posted in the User namespace, but rather articles posted in a standard wiki namespace, and every time somebody submits some fanfiction the standard warning about "being editing mercilessly" appears under the editbox; in the discussion about whether fanfiction should be kept on the site, it was clearly stated that the site's copyright implies that fanfiction posted on a wiki can be freely edited. There may be some limits to what's acceptable, but in reality that applies to every wiki article: the content should be appropriate for the article. So just as you wouldn't replace the contents of Oblivion:Chorrol with Oblivion:Daedra Heart, you wouldn't replace a fanfiction article with something completely different. Basically, if someone is not comfortable with posting his/her fanfiction given the site's standard editing practices, then the fanfiction shouldn't be posted here; there are many other sites that are better suited for fanfiction.
-
- All of which is a long-winded way of saying that I think you are free to edit the fanfiction summaries, especially to make changes such as removing fanfiction from the descriptions.
- I don't see that it breaks the site's copyrights for Vook to post an article and attribute it to MadMax06. I'd assume that there was some offline interaction between the two. If MadMax06 were to raise an objection then we could decide what to do, but otherwise it seems like there's no problem.
- The redlinks don't particularly bother me, but if you think it would be preferable to change them, I don't have any objections. --NepheleTalk 14:58, 13 February 2008 (EST)

- Your first point perfectly illustrates why I still believe that fanfiction should be in User space. Typically if you write something like this, you generally have a personal connection to it, and would prefer not to have other people mess around with it. Putting into User space is the best way of saying "This story is mine, please leave it alone." Since there's not likely to be much in the way of factual contributions to fanfiction (since it's by definition not content seen in or confirmed by the games), there shouldn't be any reason for other people to edit your fanfiction (except for the occasional spelling/grammer tweak). You can't write fiction objectively, and hence it will always be something that is personal. There's a place for all things personal on this site, and that's precisely what the User space is for. Keep in mind, I'm not trying to just hide away the fanfiction where nobody will see it. Having this page here in General namespace to link to each of the submitted stories is still perfectly acceptable. I just think that the stories themselves should be in User space, particularly if their authors would prefer not to have their work messed around with by other people. --TheRealLurlock Talk 22:48, 14 February 2008 (EST)

- My thoughts:
- I agree with moving the fanfictions to userspaces, though I'm sure it needs more community discussion.
- It seems to me that a page (like this one) in the General namespace should be okay to edit, simply so that stories can be better summarized and differentiated. Perhaps we should add a notice to this article that the summaries may be edited. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I won't do anything until everyone is in agreement. --GuildKnightTalk2me 01:00, 16 February 2008 (EST)
- I've attributed Honor thy Brothers to Vook and changed the links for Piratesahoy and Daveoten to their contribs pages. Dagoth Ur, Mad God T C E 03:21, 12 April 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Redguard
There is no section for Redguard Fanfiction, does that mean you don't allow it? Or has no one contributed.--Puddle 12:20, 1 March 2008 (EST)
- No one contributed yet. Feel free to add the Redguard section if you have a fanfic for it. Vesna 12:34, 1 March 2008 (EST)
[edit] Content
Are there some rules that apply to fanfiction? I was wondering if I could write a story in which a character defecates on a statue. --Twentyfists 11:16, 4 March 2008 (EST)
- The rules are the same as for the rest of the site. There's a fair amount of bad language in the TES Games so we don't try to pretend it doesn't exist, but there's no need to go overboard. If it's really necessary then go ahead. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 11:28, 4 March 2008 (EST)
- Thanks, but I decided that I wouldn't include it anyway. Bad language in fanfiction never went over very well with me, so I can only imagine how badly defecation would go down. --Twentyfists 21:45, 7 March 2008 (EST)
- Well take the quest on Oblivion, 'Newheims Flagon'. At the end he says something like; "Ah finally I can take a drink without it having to taste like goblin piss. There are many more examples like that on these games. --Matthewest •T•C•E• 05:50, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

[edit] A silly question
Just a normal question, prose is the form of writing sort of how we think everyday, and dosen't have to be poetic or funnny or anything right?--Puddle 22:54, 6 April 2008 (EDT)
- "The ordinary form of spoken or written language, without metrical structure, as distinguished from poetry or verse." [1] –Rpeh•T•C•E• 01:46, 7 April 2008 (EDT)
[edit] Very Bginner Question
I was wondering ow do write a fanfiction. i would like o know rules and conducts ect when witing fan fiction and i would like to know to acces the writer where i may post my own fanfaction. M.trix Suday April 27(EST)
- You can create fanfic pages under your own userspace, such as here: User:M.trix/Fanfic you could then add links to it from your own userpage to make it easier to access. by the way, if you want to add your signature to talk pages, just add four tildes like this. ~~~~ --Volanaro 05:27, 28 April 2008 (EDT)
[edit] Comedy/Prose
Ok, should Comedy and Prose be in one section or not. I think they should be, as the definition of prose is more or less any writing that's not poetry. There are always going to be loose borders here. Should the limericks be in Poetry or in Comedy? But I'm pretty sure that most people would agree that fictional literature can be split pretty easily into the two sections: Poetry and Prose.

[edit] Question of placing
Hi I am writing my first story. for now I have placed it at Oblivion Fanfiction but I don't know of I should put it at Comedy instead. Could somone take a look at it here? -Goblin lair 10:06, 17 August 2008
[edit] poem about Umaril
Shall I add a poem about Umaril the unfethered on Tamriel poetry or just on the Oblivion fanfiction? -Gbolin lair 11:14, 6 September 2008
- Well I just place it on poetry. -Goblin lair 14:43, 6 September 2008
[edit] Agent Phintias
The link to my story, just under Oblivion Fanfiction isn't working, I want to know if I'm doing anything wrong. This is the link title (search for it; it's there): User:Ninja Hinder/Agent Phintias
- I've fixed it - You've written your story at " User:Ninja Hinder/Agent Phintias:Infiltration. ", complete with the period at the end. --GuildKnightTalk2me 20:07, 23 September 2008 (EDT)
