The Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary

The Dark Brotherhood is a guild of professional assassins with considerable influence and power. It is similar to Morrowind's Morag Tong, but despite a common misconception, it is a completely separate organization; also, the legality of this organization is much more limited than that of its older cousin. The leader of the Dark Brotherhood is the Night Mother. In Skyrim, you can choose to either join the Dark Brotherhood and take on assassination missions for a large amount of money, or destroy the Brotherhood's remaining chapter.

[edit] Joining

Joining the Dark Brotherhood requires you first complete the quest Innocence Lost. You can start that quest by overhearing a rumor that Aventus Aretino is performing the ritual, the Black Sacrament, or by talking to the orphans of Honorhall Orphanage in Riften about Aventus Aretino.

After completing Innocence Lost, you will be able to join the Dark Brotherhood (or choose to destroy it) in the quest With Friends Like These....

[edit] Destroying the Dark Brotherhood

To destroy the Dark Brotherhood, kill Astrid instead of a hostage when you arrive in the shack in the quest With Friends Like These.... You will then fail that quest, and the quest Destroy the Dark Brotherhood! will appear in its place. Keep in mind that you must make this decision now, as at any other point in the game Astrid is considered a quest giver and so cannot be killed, only knocked out.

[edit] Advantages to Joining

  • Free access to the Sanctuary, which can also be accessed while getting rid of the Dark Brotherhood. However, if you decide to get rid of the Dark Brotherhood, you will not gain access to the Dawnstar Sanctuary which has some useful items when upgraded at the end of the Dark Brotherhood questline.
  • You receive your own set of Dark Brotherhood armor, which boosts several of the skills required of an assassin. This armor can prove very helpful throughout the quest line. However, it can also be obtained from dead members if you decide to take down the Brotherhood.
    • You may find Dark Brotherhood robes, shoes and hand wraps (all with the prefix "Shrouded") which yield no armor but can be useful for a mage using the Mage Armor perk. Robes have 15% destruction spell cost reduction.
  • The unique horse Shadowmere (reward for the quest The Cure for Madness), which has more health than other horses
    • Unlike in Oblivion, Shadowmere is not an essential character in Skyrim, and will die instead of being knocked unconscious. However, it does regenerate health very quickly, so this is rarely a problem.
  • Minion and sanctuary for yourself after completion of quests, with similar attributes of a house.
  • The Summon Spectral Assassin power
  • All Dark Brothers and Sisters are friendly to Stage Four vampires - you can go to the Sanctuary to feed if you can't do it in cities/can't avoid combat.
  • Access to Babette, the Master Trainer for Alchemy, and Nazir, the Master Trainer for Light Armor.

[edit] Quests

[edit] Primary Quests

The primary Dark Brotherhood questline consists of fourteen quests. Three achievements (50 points; 2 Bronze and 1 Silver) are unlocked by the guild's quests.

[edit] Contract Quests

[edit] Other Quests

[edit] Radiant Quests

[edit] Miscellaneous Quests

These are miscellaneous quests (each quest's objective is listed in the "Miscellaneous" section of your journal) and will only activate if certain conditions are met

[edit] Notes

  • Joining the Brotherhood adds a few lines of NPC dialogue, like with other factions. Some guards will say "Psst, I know who you are.... Hail Sithis."
  • Sometimes you may encounter a Dark Brotherhood assassin who carries a contract for your assassination as a random occurrence.
  • Contracts carried out by The Dark Brotherhood are illegal, unlike a Morag Tong writ. Therefore, it is vital that no one else sees you commit a murder while carrying out a mission in a city or settlement.
