Whiterun is a major city located in the center of Skyrim, and near the Throat of the World. It is home to the Companions.
Whiterun's central position in Skyrim makes it a crucial strategic point in the ongoing war between the Imperial Legion loyalists and Stormcloak rebels. Controlling Whiterun Hold will give access to all the surrounding areas. Currently, Whiterun is nominally aligned with The Empire, but the Jarl, Balgruuf the Greater, seems to care more about the people of Whiterun than either side of the conflict, and so the city is effectively neutral.
Whiterun is separated into three districts. The Plains District is the lowest of the three, where all the merchants, stalls, inns, and a few residential houses are located. This district also has the only entrance into Whiterun. The Wind District is home to the majority of the people of Whiterun. It also has the Temple of Kynareth and Jorrvaskr. The Cloud District is the location of Dragonsreach and is the highest point in Whiterun.
Belethor is the local general merchant, The Bannered Mare is the local inn. The Drunken Huntsman sells hunting goods and Warmaiden's is a local armory. Arcadia's Cauldron has ingredients for sale. Those arrested in Whiterun end up in the Dragonsreach Dungeon within the Jarl's Palace, Dragonsreach. Farengar Secret-Fire, the court wizard, can also be found in Dragonsreach and offers spells for sale.
The Companions are a major faction based in Whiterun and the city was actually built around their hall, Jorrvaskr. The Skyforge is used by the Companions and has existed at the site longer than Jorrvaskr itself.
